Jones Beach Recreation Needs Assessment

Long Island, NY

Mr. Gross completed a recreation needs assessment for soccer and football, volleyball, skateboarding, Lacrosse, and water pad facilities at historic Jones Beach State Park, which sees six to eight million visitors per year. The iconic park suffered damage from Hurricane Sandy, resulting in the need for upgrading and replacement of facilities. A park master plan required input on the need for facilities envisioned in the park. The needs assessment, which drew from demographic analysis, participation rates, comparable facilities, and other factors, helped guide development of the master plan. This work was completed for New York State Parks and the Open Space Institute.  Additional follow-up work was recently completed to assess the need for “court” games and fitness activities.
